Advice for Beginners

Here’s a short list of considerations for those starting out in training, working out, exercise or whatever label you want to attach to building a ‘better’ you!

  • Show up, Ask & Learn, Repeat.
  • Know your goal, your real why.
  • Make a commitment to train twice or three times a week or more if that matches your goal.
  • Learn from a professional not social media how to perform the following categories of movement.
  • Squat, press, pull, hinge, brace.
  • Practice good reps not intensity.
  • Performing consistently good and better reps at sustainable efforts will teach your brain how to be more efficient and recruit more muscle more effectively.
  • This will deliver your results.
  • Practicing good reps also minimises the risk of injury, both with the light weights, and when you push to attempt heavier weights.
  • Rest between sets, don’t rush.
  • Show up, Ask & Learn, Repeat.

There’s a to-do list for the weekend for you.

One Man, His Kettlebell & the Dog

One Man, His Kettlebell and His Dog is here now, not next week.
Recovery from Covid is accelerating and I thought I’d get a start with a simple approach.
1. Carry my kettlebell between the suitcase, racked and overhead position for a few rounds.
Then…
2. One Clean, One Press, One Goblet Squat x 10 mins without getting out of breath.

The Goal today was to just set the scene with a simple, easy session. Over the course of a week I’d incorporate a medium session and also a perceived harder session.

Kettlebells Again!

While I’m living on a rural farm based cottage, I thought it would be a great idea to buy a single kettlebell and share some short and sweet routines. You may of course join in or just watch!

If you wanted to learn some of the movements in more detail, I do have a free library of resources that I can also share – you just have to ask.

I will share via the usual socials (FB & Insta) and this website 🙂

FitStrong PT, group training, Kettlebell Training, Original Strength, personal training, Strength training

Hello Limerick

It’s crazy to think that I started my personal training aspirations in 1997 in Belfast. I kind of thought it would be something I would ‘do’ until I got a grown up job. “Haha”, doesn’t perspective change and evolve.

The business of Personal Training is now a very grown up job. Planning, strategies, ongoing study and very effective programming is now part of the day to day running of training people.

I will be providing personal training, shared PT and group training from Animal Flow, Kettlebell classes and a Restoration class.

PERSONAL TRAINING will focus on helping people move better and stronger. Whether you’re starting out or more advanced, stronger is stronger. The tools and movement choices may vary, but the goals are to remain the goal.

A heart-felt farewell to Brisbane

The past 12 years have been enlightening from both a progressive perspective for business and then regressive from a family perspective.

We came to acknowledging the reality that our family is indeed far away. With our parents ageing as we all do and our daughter missing out on family time with her grandparents and cousins and other factors, we decided to move closer to family.

Relocating back across the world to Ireland, setting up a new business in Limerick doesn’t put fear in me. I now have new skills I picked up, learned and adopted and adapted to create a successful Brisbane business.

This was not by accident. My time in Brisbane has given me access to education and people that I would never have availed of had I stayed where I was in Northern Ireland. That’s not a criticism of the NI and UK fitness industry but the result of me being too comfortable where I was. Moving was a massive turning point for me.

I tentatively entered the RKC (Russian Kettlebell certification) in 2011 guided by who I consider a good friend and mentor Piers Kwan at Queensland Kettlebells. The confidence boost I earned from passing the RKC, at that time the worlds toughest industry recognised certification, drove me to dig deeper into what else I could learn and achieve as an older student and professional. I never liked wasting time and money on foo-foo, insignificant courses so threw myself into the leading education that I could attend.

Meeting Geoff Neupert and Tim Anderson in 2014 during the Original Strength cert was a game changer too. I now had a tool to help people move better safely. I also discovered I was part a community of people who loved to move, not exercise or burn calories, but move. This was the start of a paradigm shift. We don’t exercise – we are made to move.

Learning further from Pavel Tsatsouline in the newly founded StrongFirst helped to cement in place new models of training that steered programming away from maximal efforts and towards the skill of strength, working at moderate levels of practice. Not easy, but simple.

Coach Dan John figured more and more in my learning as he taught us how to simplify further, how to identify where we start a program to direct us to the goal. The goal is to keep the goal the goal.

As a business owner I accepted the fact I needed a better business model and understanding of what I was doing. I worked with Marsha Boyle business mentor in Brisbane to help me see more clearly. The skills I picked up with Marsha help me every time I work on marketing and speaking to new customers.

The world of moving introduced me to MovNat and Erwan Le Corre, the philosopher of natural fitness. Nature has a lot to offer if you want to minimise your gym time and get back to how we became the alpha species.

And then Ido Portal took me to the exploration of movement – this continues every day. There is no wrong movement. There is lack of preparation and lack of awareness.

Mike Fitchs Animal Flow taught by Andrew Chadwick in Queensland brought a system to ground based movement which ties in nicely to further exploring how the body connects to itself and the ground.

The very smart Paul McIlroy and his Amazing 12 has been the icing on the cake for the business. Becoming a certified A12 coach gave me a very intelligent program to help people transform their mindset in regards to how they eat, how they train for strength and aesthetics. So far I’ve helped dozens of people learn how to safely get really strong, lose body fat and have a better relationship with food. This story shall continue.

My wife and motivator Vivienne continues to keep my head on straight… I love you dearly.

Any business however, no matter how good the qualifications of a proprietor, has nothing without its customers, clients, supporters and friends.

I have worked with many people over the years. Some came, learned and moved on. That’s great. My goal is to make an impact.

Others stayed, and stayed, and became more than just clients; they became life-long friends who I welcome into my new home any time they’re in Limerick of course haha.

In no particular order I want to especially thank the following people for supporting me and walking the path I trod and continue to tread.

James, Stef, Melissa, Dan, Daniel, Bashier, Jill, Melinda, Ian, Robyn, Kay, Denise, Les, Judy, Alyson, Peter, Von, Julie, Leanne, Kelly-Anne, Geoff, Jack, Jo & Bernie, Kadi, Gabi & Jane, Morgan, Esti, Katie, Tony and Sam, Sharyn and Sabrina, Matt, Jane, Nathan, Nathan and Nathan, Annie, Angela, Maree and Mal, Marie and Kerry, Conor, Alex and Kelly, Atish, Manoj, Alexander and Chi, Michael, Courtney, Chloe, Rob, Rachel, Andrew, Levi, Mark, Piers, Mat Aldous and the crew at QKB

…. and I am sure I am leaving many more out.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for making my time in Australia the wonderful experience it has been. You have all got a place in my heart. We shall meet again.

Peace, happiness and strength,

Jamie, Vivienne, Alyssa and Bella the Dog.

FitStrong is on the Move

It’s been very quiet on the blog post sharing front over the past few months and for a very good reason.

We’ve been planning our relocation to Ireland. Yes, we’re moving from sunny Brisbane to the cheery city of Limerick in the south of Ireland. So much planning and organising behind closed doors until now, when I tell you all about this development.

I will be continuing to share and teach about moving strong. I will get back to releasing new online programs with an app based platform and I will be rebranding as MoveStrong when I start to work in the awesome TBB in Limerick.

In particular I will be focusing on helping people with their personal transformation with my Amazing 12 Limerick. In addition I will be reaching out the older population to create a new wave of Super Seniors much like I have here in Brisbane.

If you want to reach out and talk more, please do get back to me.

Amazing 12 Graduates July 2022

Some interesting stories to tell about the participants who completed this wave of the Amazing 12 Brisbane.

One couple wanted to see what happens when you repeat the program after having lost a combined 16kg the previous round. They got very strong is the quick answer but I’ll tell you more about this in a future post.

A couple of others had health and feeling good on their agenda and another wanted to try a different method of training, safely and efficiently.

I will talk about each participant in seperate posts later but for now, I want to congratulate each and everyone for completing the A12 Brisbane.

The 101 on Crawling for Adults

Are you leaking strength?
(90 second read)

Stronger is not necessarily expressed by lifting bigger weights. Whilst I wholeheartedly adore strength training with barbells, kettlebells, pull up bars, other heavy stuff; it’s too easy to forget what made us strong in the first place and what still has a place to keep functioning better as adults. One such original strengthening movement was and still is ‘crawling’.

You may be thinking ‘yeah, but I can lift heavy stuff. I don’t need to do these other things!’

Keeping a fully functioning body allows us to demonstrate the impressive heavy lifting and with a much lower risk of injury to boot.

Crawling does have its role in rehabilitation but the restorative properties are well worth a few minutes every few days or so as part of a warming up routine.
Crawling will help restore the reflexive linkage between the upper and lower body. It will build coordination and very quickly indentify breaks in the linkage, or weaknesses where strength leaks out.

I prefer the slow crawl, like a sloth. Moving with speed it’s easy to hide or not get time to see imbalances or weakness, but move slowly and you’ll very quickly identify what’s going on.

I remember attending my Animal Flow certification weekend a few years ago. There was one jacked up guy with very impressive lifts. He could bench press 160kg, squat over 200kg and deadlift around 240kg. However, his connection with his body was poor by comparison, demonstrated by an inability to crawl on his hands and feet for more than 4 metres without blowing a gasket!

Getting back to basics and getting back to the moves that created our initial physicality is never a waste of time.

If you’re curious, get down on all fours and crawl slow. No pauses, just slow moving. Maybe balance a book on your back. It will give feedback about the stability in your hips and shoulders. Perhaps record yourself with your phone to see how you move.

Got any feedback? Did you try this and discover something interesting? I’d love to hear back from you.

I am looking for Limerick couples who want to Transform together

Maybe you’ve decided it’s time to get on top of your health and strength? Maybe you’re getting married soon and want to get into ‘great shape’ for the big day? Maybe you’ve realised you’ve let yourself slip over the past couple of years and want to move better, feel stronger and fitter?

Perhaps you simply want and need to transform your relationship with food, your waistline and your strength and fitness.

If this is you, let me introduce the Amazing 12.

The Amazing 12 program delivers all the above mentioned outcomes with methods you will never see in any other gym or the internet. While the exercises may be familiar, the 12 week program is incredibly smart, NOT a beatdown, NOT a starvation, juicing, pills or potions program – just a great program that will not only deliver the physical results but help you create a healthier outlook on exercise and nutrition. Previously run in Brisbane Australia, the Amazing 12 has now been brought to Limerick.

ARE YOU COMMITTED TO YOURSELF 100%?

Below are pictures of Jamie (48) and Vivienne (46) from Albany Creek, Australia. Both completed the A12 program with ease, Jamie losing 11kg he never knew he had whilst improving strength and fitness dramatically despite elbow problems. Viv lost 4.5kg and found herself feeling so much more confident and stronger in her day to day life. In fact, during the program she increased her 5 rep max squat to her 30 rep max squat!!!!

I am accepting applications from a small number people who are ready to commit 100% and make a change to their life from early 2023.

YOU will need to train three times a week for 45 minutes – that’s all.

As the coach, potentially your coach, I am 100% committed to guiding you though every stage of the program, both in the gym, and via online nutritional support.
